  “So when are you two planning round two?”

  I looked between Bryce and Dan. “Whenever’s good for you guys.”

  “How about…” Dan started, but he was interrupted by crashing in the trees. Arranging a repeat performance would have to wait, though not for long if I had anything to do with it.

  All three of us looked up. Something was crashing through the woods and it sounded big. No. It couldn’t possibly be. That was just a legend after all! I looked into the forest for the second time that night trying to see what was out there making so much noise. Could that really be the beast? Were we about to come face to face with the subject of our class project after all?

  Sarah crashed through the branches into the clearing and she looked pissed. She glared at all of us, Bryce included, with undisguised hostility. I favored her with a satisfied smile as I pressed myself closer to Dan. I’d gotten one hell of a taste of the man that she so desperately wanted, and now that he’d chosen me I felt smug satisfaction.

  "Well it looks like you thre have been cozy here by the fire while I was out on a wild goose chase," Sarah said.

  “I told you to stay by the fire,” I said. “That’s where all the fun is.”

  Sarah’s eyes narrowed as though she realized there was more to that statement than what I was letting on, but even if she suspected she couldn’t possibly know what had happened.

  “So you didn’t find the beast out there?” I asked.

  “No,” Sarah said. She moved over and threw herself down next to the fire. "I can't believe this! We traipse around for miles in the woods chasing shadows and being scared shitless hearing howling while you two are back here having a grand old time together!"

  I looked over to Bryce and he grinned me, that cocky beautiful grin. How could I have ever hated that?

  "I don't know," Bryce said. "I guess Nicole was right about the Beast of Wolf Ridge being a wild story for tourists."
